Advancing Humane Animal Welfare in Nepal

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the program because I found only one review in my field, and it didn’t help me much in preparing. However, it’s important to understand that every volunteer takes something unique from their experience. I’m writing this so that future participants can feel more confident. The project description mentioned that a local SIM card would be provided, but if you’re traveling without roaming, like I did, be aware that there is no free Wi-Fi at Kathmandu Airport. I used a currency exchange service at the airport exit (the exchange rate difference compared to city exchangers is minimal) and purchased a SIM card myself. Bijaya personally met me at the airport, arranged my transfer to the guesthouse, and provided a hot dinner. I was placed in a room shared with a volunteer from Germany, a very pleasant girl. Everyone speaks English well. The first day was free for adaptation. We visited two temples, and Bijaya introduced us to the local traditional cuisine. On the second day, we were introduced to Dr. Thapa and his wonderful team at the Mobile Veterinary Hospital. As part of the volunteer program, we also had the opportunity to exchange experiences with the veterinary service of the Central Zoo of Kathmandu, the only zoo in the country. Beyond participating in the program, I also initiated a professional collaboration by integrating my expertise into Nepal’s animal welfare system through HICAST, addressing the urgent need for humane population control and animal protection. I needed to expand my volunteer program to integrate my professional expertise into the local animal welfare community, and Bijaya helped me organize this through HICAST. Kathmandu itself is a relatively small city, but it’s full of life. The guesthouse where volunteers stay has everything needed for a reasonably comfortable stay for an undemanding traveler. The distance from the guesthouse to the volunteer sites is about 5–8 km. You can easily cover this distance in several ways: by taxi (around 500 NPR), moto-taxi (around 170 NPR), or bus (25 NPR). However, since I prefer physical activity and wanted to immerse myself in the local atmosphere, I chose to walk whenever possible. Thanks to that, I took countless photos. For personal expenses, I recommend bringing at least $100, depending on your spending habits. It’s worth noting that the volunteer program organizer can arrange additional trips to the mountains or other tourist activities, personally accompanying you. I didn’t take advantage of this option because my focus was on integrating my practical expertise into Nepal’s professional community. There is an undeniable and urgent need here for humane population control and animal welfare protection, which was the purpose of my volunteer work. Keep in mind that nights in Kathmandu can be quite cold, and houses don’t have heating, so bring warm clothes. But even if you don’t, you can find everything you need within walking distance of the project. The project site offers 24/7 Wi-Fi access and a water cooler on each floor. European-style power sockets are provided, so you don’t need to bring an adapter. You will also receive three meals a day in a warm, family-like atmosphere. The program was packed with activities—if I had stayed for a month instead of two weeks, I still would have had plenty to do. One thing to note: Nepal experiences frequent tremors, so if you’re afraid of earthquakes, consider the risks in advance. Also, houses traditionally have single-pane windows, and at night, your sleep will likely be accompanied by the persistent barking of numerous dogs. In the early morning, around 5 or 6 AM, monks begin chanting, which you won’t miss unless you bring earplugs. This wasn’t a problem for me, but for those who value privacy, it’s good to be aware of these things. And the cherry on top—if you love children, the volunteer programs of the Third Eye Foundation are perfect for you. Bijaya’s daughters are an absolute delight, and the children here in general are simply wonderful. It was one of the most heartwarming experiences of my trip. For me, this program was not just about volunteering but about making a lasting impact. I hope future participants find the same sense of purpose and connection in their work here.
